We encourage community groups to use the Center for Community Organizing for events, benefits, workshops, etc. In addition to the spaces listed below, the Center includes a stage and large open area. Our events policy is available on the web or in print.
The following groups and projects operate out of here:
The Inside Books Project (IBP): We are an all-volunteer organization that provides free books and literature to Texas' incarcerated population. There are more than 150,000 people imprisoned in Texas. We receive 600 letters each month from people seeking books and work hard to send books to each of them- please help! Our work nights are Thur. 6-10 pm and Sun. 7-midnight at the Rhizome Collective.
Donations and books can be taken or mailed to:
IBP, c/o 12th St. Books
827 W. 12th St.
Austin, TX 78701
voicemail at: 512-647-4803
email: insidebooksproject@yahoo.com.
Austin Independent Media Center (IMC): Part of a global movement to make media accessible, empowering non-corporate journalism. Members of the IMC collective cover local and global events, encourage people to make their own media, and maintain an open-publishing webpage. Check it out for local events, and local and global news.
Bikes Across Borders: Cultural political art, education and bicycles. We intercept bikes from the waste stream, fix them, and bring them to community bike workshops south of the border. Volunteer work parties are Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-10 pm. Learn how to fix bikes or teach others!
Art and Revolution: Art/puppet building space - making the struggle creative and beautiful! Available for pre-scheduled use.
Food Not Bombs Community Kitchen: This kitchen was built by the local Food Not Bombs, an organization that serves free meals in public spaces. It is available for pre-scheduled use by community groups.
The Austin Zine Library: this project provides zine-lovers and other curious folks a place where they can come and read underground literature they might not be able to find anywhere else.
for more information contact: zinelibrary@rhizomecollective.org
Kids' Space: This areas new strawbale walls are almost done being plastered. Once completed, this space will be open to kids, parents & allies. We are eager to have it act as a springboard for the creation of a free school similar to the Albany Free School, in Albany, NY. Please contact us if you are interested in putting energy and ideas toward this goal.
